Dallas Elementary School far outlived its usable life. Built as a shelter after Hurricane Agnes flooded the Wyoming Valley in 1972, the school was a prefabricated building that sits on a concrete slab. Inside, a lack of natural light and aging finishes are a sharp contrast to the energetic teachers and eager young learners who call the school home.

Alloy5 assisted Dallas School District with space planning and a grade re-alignment strategy that provides additional capacity, alleviates overcrowding and promotes team teaching while isolating construction to one facility. The new Dallas Intermediate School is a 64,000-square-foot, two-story structure housing about 700 students in third to fifth grade.

Opened in the fall of 2019, the school features an efficient floor plan of flexible spaces for small and large group instruction and teacher collaboration as well as assembly for school-wide and community events. Interior finishes were chosen for budget and durability, making the school a long-lasting asset for the district, of which the community can be proud.
